The Honourable Wally Oppal, K.C. joins Boughton Law as Senior Counsel

Boughton Law is pleased to announce that Hon. Wally Oppal K.C. has joined the firm as Senior Counsel.

“We are honoured and delighted that Wally Oppal, K.C. has chosen to join Boughton Law. His distinguished career as advocate, as a member of our judiciary and as Attorney General of British Columbia is one we take particular pride in. His service to the public of this province, most recently as Commissioner of the Missing Women Commission of Inquiry, is of special significance,” remarks George Cadman, K.C. on behalf of Boughton Law.

Early in his career, Mr. Oppal became known for his effective advocacy, most notably for his skills as a Special Prosecutor, before he was appointed to the County Court in 1981. He was appointed to the Supreme Court of British Columbia in 1985 and the British Columbia Court of Appeal in 2003. In 2005, Mr. Oppal chose to leave the Bench to seek public office. He served in the provincial cabinet as Attorney General and Minister Responsible for Multiculturalism until 2009. In 2011, Mr. Oppal was named as the second Chancellor of Thompson Rivers University.

A lifetime resident of British Columbia, Mr. Oppal has dedicated his entire working life to the pursuit of social justice and community safety. His landmark report on policing in British Columbia led to many policing reforms after its publication in 1994. As Attorney General from 2005 to 2009, Mr. Oppal spearheaded numerous significant reforms of the justice system. His passion for the Canadian legal system is further exemplified by the various positions he has held throughout the years. Some of these positions include: President, Law Courts Education Society of British Columbia, Former Director, Family Services of Greater Vancouver, as well as Former Director, B.C. Coalition for Safer Communities.

His skills and experience as counsel, as an arbitrator and mediator as well as a strategic advisor will be a tremendous asset to the business community of British Columbia,” comments Mr. Cadman. Joining Boughton Law as Senior Counsel, Mr. Oppal will work closely with clients to provide strategic advice on dispute resolution and public sector related matters.
