Darren Penner, a Vancouver immigration lawyer at Boughton Law

Darren advises clients in two specialized areas: immigration law and AI compliance. In immigration, he assists both businesses and individuals with temporary and permanent residence, citizenship applications, and the renewal of status as workers, students, or visitors. Darren is highly experienced in work permit applications through the Canada-United States- Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), formerly known as NAFTA, and other free-trade agreements, LMIA-based and PNP-based work permits, and LMIA-exempt work permits. His background in corporate and commercial law helps him understand and anticipate his clients’ business needs when formulating immigration plans.

Darren also focuses on the more complex and challenging areas of immigration law. He has extensive experience with family class applications, including sponsorships and humanitarian and compassionate applications, and frequently handles difficult cases involving inadmissibility, medical or criminal rehabilitation, and other barriers to entry. Darren’s practice is built on navigating situations where there is no simple path, and where strategic advice and careful advocacy can make the difference.

In his AI Compliance practice, Darren advises employers and organizations on the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence. His work in this area includes guiding businesses on privacy and human rights obligations, helping them draft AI use policies for employees, and advising on compliance with emerging provincial, federal, and international regulations. Darren’s AI Compliance practice is focused on future-proofing organizations as they integrate AI into their workplaces.

Known for his practical problem-solving and approachable style, Darren is recognized by clients for bringing clarity and reassurance to stressful situations. He has a reputation for creative thinking, delivering clear strategies in complex matters, and making clients feel heard and supported.
