Steven Shergill

Steven practises primarily in the areas of construction litigation, commercial disputes, real estate litigation, and estate litigation. He brings a practical, business-oriented approach to complex legal problems, with a particular focus on resolving high-stakes conflicts for developers, contractors, business owners, property owners and other stakeholders in a broad range of disputes. Steven has represented a wide range of clients, including local governments, large developers, contractors, and individuals.

Steven’s experience spans multi-million-dollar infrastructure claims, builders’ lien disputes, shareholder and partnership conflicts, contract litigation, and commercial leasing issues. He works with clients to develop practical, effective strategies for resolving disputes through negotiation, mediation, arbitration, and litigation.

Steven holds a Juris Doctor from Thompson Rivers University, where he graduated as valedictorian, and a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of British Columbia. He articled with the Legal Services Division of the City of Surrey, where he gained early insight into municipal and regulatory litigation.

Steven is deeply involved in the legal community, serving as a board member and volunteer lawyer for the South Asian Legal Clinic of BC. He is fluent in Punjabi, French, and Urdu and is conversational in Farsi.

Representative Cases as Counsel for:

1. Successfully preserved a plaintiff’s right to a certificate of pending litigation registered against real property, Bentham v. Capstone Group Holdings Ltd., 2025 BCSC 1667.
2. Successfully defended an application to cancel a certificate of pending litigation in a dispute involving a breach of contract, breach of trust, and breach of fiduciary duty, 0894045 B.C. Ltd. v. 1294778 B.C. Ltd., 2025 BCSC 359.
3. Acted as co-counsel in obtaining judgment exceeding $650,000 in a dispute of breach of contract, breach of trust, and unjust enrichment, Dhillon v. Dasta, 2024 BCSC 360.
4. Assisted in litigation involving contractors and designers in claims relating to a public infrastructure project.
5. Conducted prosecutions on behalf of municipalities involving bylaw and provincial statutory contraventions.
