Announcing Boughton Law’s Newest Shareholders, Darren Penner & Jimmy Burg

Boughton is pleased to announce that Darren Penner and Jimmy Burg have become shareholders of the firm. Jimmy and Darren have each made meaningful contributions to Boughton’s continued growth through their dedication to client service, strategic insight, and collaborative approach across practice groups.

Darren advises clients in three specialized and rapidly evolving areas: immigration law, privacy, and AI compliance. In his immigration practice, he supports businesses and individuals with temporary and permanent residence applications, citizenship matters, and complex work permit strategies, including CUSMA and other free-trade agreement pathways, and is frequently retained on challenging cases involving inadmissibility and humanitarian considerations. In his privacy and AI compliance practice, Darren guides organizations on the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence, advising on privacy and human rights obligations, drafting workplace AI use policies, and supporting compliance with emerging provincial, federal, and international regulatory frameworks. Known for his practical problem-solving and approachable style, Darren delivers clear, strategic advice in high-stakes and complex matters involving both complex law and emerging technologies.

Jimmy is a skilled litigator with a growing reputation for resolving complex commercial disputes, regulatory matters, and Indigenous legal issues across a broad range of industries including natural resources, energy, infrastructure, and real estate. His commercial practice includes contract disputes, shareholder and partnership conflicts, business torts, fraud, and fiduciary cases. He regularly appears before British Columbia courts and represents clients in arbitration and regulatory proceedings for environmental and energy matters, Indigenous law, and public law matters. Clients value his compelling advocacy, commitment to their cause, and ability to navigate disputes that intersect legal, technical, and operational considerations. Drawing on his background as a geologist and environmental scientist, and prior experience in the mining, oil and gas, and environmental industries, Jimmy brings a unique depth of industry insight to technically complex matters. He also serves as Boughton’s Meritas Emerging Leader.
